The Critical Payment Deadline
If you travel through the M50 toll point without a registered tag or video account, you are classified as an unregistered user. This means you must manually pay for each journey within a strict timeframe.
Payment Deadline: 8pm Next Day
Unregistered users must pay their M50 toll by 8pm on the day following their journey. Miss this deadline and you will face automatic penalty charges.
For example, if you drive through the toll point on Monday at any time, your payment must be completed by 8pm on Tuesday. There is no grace period or extension available for this deadline.
Penalty Structure
The M50 toll penalty system operates on an escalating scale. The longer you leave payment outstanding, the more you will owe. Understanding this structure can help you avoid unnecessary costs.
Stage 1: Standard Toll Request
If payment is not received by the 8pm deadline, a Standard Toll Request (STR) is issued. This notice includes the original toll amount plus an administration fee. You typically have 14 days from the date of this notice to pay.
- Original toll charge applies
- Administration fee added
- Total amount approximately double the original toll
- 14 days to respond and pay
Stage 2: Second Penalty Notice
If the Standard Toll Request remains unpaid after 14 days, a second penalty notice is issued with additional charges. The total amount owed continues to increase.
- Further penalty added to the outstanding amount
- Total can reach several times the original toll
- Another period given to pay
Stage 3: Legal Enforcement
After 72 days of non-payment, the debt may be referred for legal enforcement. This can result in court proceedings and additional legal costs being added to your account.
Court Proceedings
Legal action for unpaid tolls can result in a court order for payment, potentially affecting your credit rating and adding significant legal costs to the original debt.
How to Avoid Penalties
The best way to avoid penalties is to ensure timely payment. Here are strategies to help you stay on top of your M50 toll obligations:
- Set a reminder: If you travel through the toll point, set an alarm on your phone for the following day before 8pm
- Open an account: Tag and video account holders never have to worry about payment deadlines as billing is automatic
- Pay immediately: If possible, pay your toll as soon as you complete your journey rather than waiting
- Keep receipts: Always retain proof of payment in case of disputes
- Check your mail: If you receive a penalty notice, act immediately rather than ignoring it
Disputing a Penalty
In some cases, you may have grounds to dispute a penalty notice. Common reasons for disputes include:
- You already paid but the payment was not recorded correctly
- Your vehicle was stolen at the time of the journey
- The camera captured the wrong registration number
- You have a valid exemption that was not recognised
To dispute a penalty, contact eFlow customer service immediately with your evidence. Keep copies of all correspondence and any supporting documentation.
